Pontecosi Lake – Garfagnana
Pontecosi Lake is located in Garfagnana in the municipality of Pieve Fosciana in the province
of Lucca.
The lake has artificial origins created following the artificial damming of the Serchio river for
exploit hydroelectric energy.
The lake is shallow and not suitable for swimming, but it has a great faunal importance, welcoming
several animal species that populate the lake cyclically.
Several species of aquatic birds can be observed, even rare ones, but the masters of the lake are the
ducks.
The lake of Pontecosi has a crazy natural setting, it is surrounded by a dense forest with picnic areas
where be able to relax and take a break from the summer heat.
On the lake there are paths to explore the surrounding area and to observe the
lake from every angle.
On the surface of the lake there are aquatic plants that provide a home for the animals
living in the lake.
It offers a spectacle even in winter when the white snow envelops the shores of the lake.
Of particular beauty are the small footbridge of the devil built in the distant past
and the small church located on the shore of the lake.

Garfagnana is located between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines in the province of Lucca.
It offers a great variety of landscapes ranging from the rocky walls of the Apuan Alps
to the splendid prairies on the lower side.
It has a large percentage of lakes all of artificial origin to exploit hydroelectric capacities.
In Garfagnana the protagonist is nature which with its uncontaminated woods offers home to many
animal species.
It is an area rich in history, the first settlements date back to Roman times.
