The Carnival Museum is located in Viareggio, it tells the path
150-year history of the world famous carnival activity
to document the artistic evolution.
The first room of the museum, dedicated to Burlamacco, is a journey through testimonies, articles and
historical models but also the story of the modern carnival and the artists who build
imposing movable papier-mâché giants.
In recent years, the visiting spaces have been expanded to accommodate the whole story
of the carnival of Viareggio.
An important symbol of the carnival is the typical Burlamacco Viareggina mask to which it was dedicated
a lot of space inside the museum.
Opening hours of the Carnival Museum
1st September – 31st May: from Wednesday to Sunday 3.00pm-7.00pm and Saturday 9.00am-1.00pm and
3.00pm-7.00pm
1 June – 31 August: from Wednesday to Sunday 9.00am-1.00pm and Saturday 09.00-13.00 and 3.00pm-
7.00pm
The entrance ticket costs € 5.00 and is free for children under the age of 11
accompanied by an adult.
The event – Viareggio Carnival Museum
The Viareggio carnival represents one of the most important and spectacular events both in Italy and in
world that hosts millions of visitors every year.
These are weeks of great celebration for which the city of Viareggio is preparing all year to give life to
wonderful and huge papier-mâché floats that parade along the seafront of Viareggio carrying colors
and joy.
The subject of the floats is very varied and goes from allegorical, naturalistic and satirical floats accompanied by
music, colors and dancers.
